It never ceases to amaze me. With the mighty cry of "Resist the Oppressor!" people will begin to oppress those around them with a vigor and zeal unequalled since the Crusades. Proudly proclaiming their own side/vision/opinion to be free of hatred, they will proceed to refer to their opponents as stupid. They base this on their opponents' refusal to agree with them.
I saw three posts on FB today from the same person. One of the posts referred to a study done that asserts that those who are conservative in their thinking are lousy thinkers. It is almost identical to the same studies done about five years ago by another think-tank that 'proved' the inherent stupidity of 'progressive' thinkers. Another of her posts quoted Thomas Jefferson and his hatred for 'the priest' because of the 'priest' being linked to oppressors and authoritarian regimes. She quoted, apparently without any flinching of conscience, a man who raped his slave woman under the cover of authority and later instructed his bankrupted family to deny the children he fathered by her lest they lay claim to any of his future earnings. Later, she posted another cartoon of Rodin's The Thinker with a variation of the Descartes philosophical assertion "I think, therefore I am" - changed to "I think, therefore I am dangerous". Of course, she did THIS without any knowledge of the fact that Descartes was a devout Catholic who was instrumental in the conversion experience of the Queen of Sweden.
I firmly believe that part of the problem we have in this country is due to the poor education offered people at the Public School level. We have determined that everyone must have an education. Ok, that's great. Unfortunately, because we never thought out exactly what constitutes an education beyond reading, writing and arithmetic, we have produced several generations of people who have never cracked open a philosophy book and would not know how to read a quote within historical context if a gun was held on them. The posts by this woman, God bless her, demonstrates why teaching someone HOW to think is just as important as teaching them WHAT to think.
The best part of a classical liberal arts education is the imparting of critical thinking skills - look at a problem, think about what it entails, come up with a solution. If you have several solutions - which you will, if you have more than two people in the room who have been taught how to think - do not attack the PERSON who has come up with a solution differing from the one you present. Rather, with cool head an warm heart, look at the solutions presented and see if there is any common ground. Look for ways they overlap. Consider the other point of view.
Because, if you cannot come up with a solution, you can always go to WAR.
What I cannot figure out today is why so many of us want to immediately go to war. We do not want to take the cool headed, long term, practical look at a situation and try to come up with a solution. Today, both sides of the political aisle are infected with a kind of gang-banger mentality. You disagree with me? That means you Dis'd me. In response, I shall grab my crotch, turn my hat on backwards, and shoot you in the head. If I aim poorly (which I usually do, because my aim is controlled by my ability to THINK) or if you return equally poorly aimed shots, what the hell? Who cares? So an innocent is caught in the cross fire....at least I posted my idiotic cartoons that attack another person's religious values and made my point.
And the point is...?
Well, apparently, the point is to insult people. It is not to try and convince anyone by using logic or history or facts. It is to hurt and insult. It is not to try and understand another's point of view. It is to hurt. It is to insult. It is to inflict a wound.
Right now, I support Rick Santorum for president. I have no doubt Mitt Romney will get the nomination and that makes me very, very sad. I do not like his record. I do not trust him. I do not like the way he made his money by gutting companies and firing people.
I do not like what the Obama Administration has done to religious liberty in this country. The man I thought would be reasonable has caused more uproar than was necessary and has shown a marked lack of integrity on many levels. Much of what went on under the Bush Administration has continued under the Obama Administration - can you say, "Waterboarding?".
So I will not be voting for either candidate. I will, most likely, be writing in Rick Santorum and 'wasting' my vote. I will do that because I cannot just vote against President Obama if I am convinced that the person getting my vote is just as untrustworthy, just as conniving and just a eager to cause rifts in this country in order to advance his own personal agenda.
I have never believed the President was born in Kenya but I absolutely believe he runs by a Socialist agenda and I do not think Modern Socialism is successful.
Now, I do not believe those who support the President are stupid. I think they are mistaken. I believe the wide swing to the left is as dangerous as a wide swing to the right.
And I think it is interesting that people believe if one is a Catholic then one is somehow anti American. Sounds very 'retro' to me, very old-fashioned....very (gasp) CONSERVATIVE.
And for those people, I will pray.

Midmorning Prayer from the Book of Wisdom
The Reading from the Book of Wisdom this morning is 11:23-24.
You have mercy on all, because you can do all things;
and you overlook the sins of men that
they may repent.
For you love all things that are
and loathe nothing that you have made.
Create in my a clean heart, O God.
Renew in me a steadfast spirit.
There has been a lot of blather the past few days about the horrendously inappropriate remarks made by Rush Limbaugh regarding a Georgetown University Law Student's testimony before a Democratic panel. The young woman is an advocate of Government paid birth control for all and she stated that her birth control costs her 3,000.00 a year. Because she cannot, at this time of her life, afford the cost she firmly believes the government needs to pay for it.
Mr. Limbaugh disagrees with her, as do I. Mr. Limbaugh and I part company in that he feels her point of view means she is a prostitute and a slut.
Mr. Limbaugh has apologized because of pressure from both sides of the aisle - Republicans and Democrats and his radio show's sponsors.
Bill Maher calls Sarah Palin (a person I do not agree with and do not support politically) the C word regularly on his program. Apparently, when he does so it is not considered a war on women.
The War on Women - or the manufactured issue of the day - is supposedly a right-wing conspiracy by Republicans and manifests itself as an attempt to withhold artificial birthcontrol from women.
It is a cleverly planned assault by the Left because of the failures of the present administration - the economy still sucks, water boarding is still being used, Gitmo is still open, our boys are being murdered by the very villains they trained in Afghanistan and we are witnesses to an assault by the present administration on organized religion that is reminiscent of the Know-Nothings of two centuries ago. I will not be surprised to see "Catholics Need Not Apply" signs in windows at some point.
Beginning with that odd question by George Stephanapolous way-back-when during the Republican debates, asking the candidates what their personal belief about artificial birth control is, the Left has carefully orchestrated the idea that if one is conservative, one hates women.
The fact that this is absurd, that the Left regularly assails women who disagree with them as c**ts, b***hes, wh***s and idiots, is lost on the majority of Liberals in the country. I see it regularly on Facebook. They continuously buy into the lie that unless one is lockstep in line with political thinking one is a traitor to their own sex - yet many of the people call themselves Catholic and demand that they be allowed to be their own Pope.
Religion and Politics are different; however, neither one of those arenas should ask that we suspend our ability to THINK, to use REASON. And while I get frustrated with those who cannot see that once you start down the road that things you WANT are automatically RIGHTS that the GOVERNMENT has to provide you are entering in to very dangerous waters of personal responsibility and government intervention into you life, it would never occur to me to call those Catholics who think Doctrine and Dogma are decided by a vote of the faithful nasty names.
There is a war on women. It is a war that began when someone, somewhere got the idea that our freedom lies in our ability to have sex without consequences and behave like immoral men. While we deserve the right to thrive in the workplace, to be able to walk down the street without being raped or beaten, to be supported financially by men who suddenly decide they want a new wife, we do NOT have a RIGHT to kill our children before they are born. We have a right, of course, to fill our bodies with whatever poisons we want in order to live however we want - we do NOT have the right to demand that the government pay for that, or that a religious institution that teaches such things are evil pay for them either, just because we took a job with them.
I am disgusted with Limbaugh. I am disgusted with Maher. I am wondering when women on BOTH sides of the aisle are going to demand that these horrible misogynist men be held accountable for their actions.
When are we going to grow up?
You have mercy on all, because you can do all things;
and you overlook the sins of men that
they may repent.
For you love all things that are

HONORING ST. VALENTINE - BOTH OF THEM
Today is the Feast Day of St Valentine, though which St. Valentine is open to debate. The early Church acknowledged two martyred priests named Valentinius and there is a fairly decent article about the facts/legends/customs and practices surrounding these two saintly Catholics that may be read here.
For someone like me, St Valentine's Day is a kind of mixed bag of horror and silliness. I have been known, in the not too distant past, to send myself flowers just so other people would not feel sorry for me. However, I got so embarrassed about having to go to Confession because of that particular lie that I was freed from that sin really fast. Besides, it is too expensive to pretend to have a boyfriend.
As I grew in both sobriety and Faith, I realized that I have a wonderful Bridegroom in Christ Jesus and I have an amazing single life due to my 12 step program. However, just between you, me and the Internet, it would be nice to get some flowers from SOMEBODY that isn't obligated to love me because we are related. Shoot, it would be nice to get a CARD from somebody I AM related to - but you know what? They let me know every day that I am loved and so it is a little difficult to work up too much steam over no roses or candy on February 14.
Anyway, I can't eat candy now because of the Gastric Sleeve surgery. This morning I weighed less than I did when I got married 25 years ago. Yes, I was a fat bride but that's beside the point. Stop bursting my bubble, will you?
The Obama Administration gave a little on the horrible HHS mandate regarding forcing religious institutions (not just The Catholic Church but ANY religious institutions) to purchase a product and provide a service that flies in the face of their religious teachings. However, it is not enough and I have a feeling his little group up there in Washington is amazed at the reaction. Catholics on both sides of the aisle, even the not-so-good Catholics like our VP, have hammered the POTUS on this issue.
So the media has retaliated by printing stories of 'intrigue and scandal' at the Vatican - let's distract the general population with the age old argument: The Catholic Church is full of sinners; therefore Her Teachings must be corrupt, outdated and ridiculous.
That is like saying, of course, that because the off ramp has a speed limit on it of 25 miles per hour but the majority of the people exiting take it at 35 that the 25 MPH must be wrong. And listen, there are those who would argue that quite forcefully and then flip their tiny little NannyGovernmentWigs when some idiot teenage flips Mommy's SUV and kills their passenger while taking the exit at 35 MPH on a rainy day.
And I am amazed that no one cares that the medicines (and I use that term lightly) the Left want made available to women on demand are full of poison; they cause blood clots, cancer, high blood pressure and have been linked to increased instances of infertility. Nope, don't address THAT part of the issue. You see, if you take these drugs you can have sex without consequences (babies) young lady and THAT is the ONLY way you will ever be FREE.
What a load of ridiculousness.
Well, I am glad today is the Feast of St Valentine under the OLD Roman Calendar. Both of them were martyrs to the Truth, defending the Faith when the government tried to wipe it out and blame us for every ill their own poor management and dissolute lifestyle had created.
The Church grows from the blood of Martyrs...and people like me, who have found Truth once the fog of drugs and alcohol had lifted, may have to be willing to say, "Go ahead. Take your best shot. Jesus, here I come".
St Valentine (both of you), pray for US!!!

Call to Catholic Action
Catholic Bishops are calling upon all the Faithful to stand up and be counted.
The Obama Administration has decided that Catholic Institutions will be required to provide Health Care Benefits that fly in the face of Catholic Teaching. There will not be any kind of 'opting out' for reasons of conscience, which not only is a horrible way to run this country but absolutely tramples upon the meaning behind the idea of separation of Church and State. We have, from the beginning, tried not to foster any whiff of theocracy in our government; however, the real worry has never been that the Church will impose their will upon the Government. Rather, it has been that the GOVERNMENT will impose its will upon the CHURCH.
You would think that well-educated people would recoil from this decision based on past historical experiences. The Church has never, and will never, be destroyed. Whether it is Roman Emperors demanding that little children offer pagan sacrifices to false gods, Muslim Imams demanding that Catholics abandon the Eucharist to follow a false religion or idiotic politicians demanding that everyone enter into private contracts for health care, persecutions of The Church have never worked. In fact, persecutions have always backfired on those trying to destroy us. We are made stronger by the blood of the martyrs and it does not matter if that blood is real or symbolic....push me around and my Faith grows deeper.
I read on Facebook where someone was OUTRAGED and so glad they had not grown up Catholic because Bishops preaching about this latest governmental injustice is WRONG. My response was to gently remind her that no one minds when our Holy Bishops speak out against injustices against immigrants. No one minds when our priests and nuns get hit with fire hoses while marching for civil rights in Selma, Alabama. No one minds when our priests preach that denying someone a fair wage based on their sex or sexual orientation is a sin. THAT is fine - it is only when we disagree with the government policy YOU agree with that we should keep our mouths shut.
Well....in all charity, may I simply say, "Stick a sock in it, Sister. We ain't shuttin' up".
The fact that large universities will probably stop providing health care if this decision is allowed to stand never seems to hit anyone. They would still be viable and still be competitive in the workplace. They would simply give their employees more money and the employee would have to get their own health care...and those Catholics who believe in separation of Church and State would not be forced to support something that is morally reprehensible to them. We will be allowed to want to go to heaven more than we want to be politically correct in a corrupt and ridiculous world.
I am proud to be an American. I am a proud Army Auntie. What I will tell you all - if you value your freedom you will stand with Catholics and demand that your representatives support a bill that allows for religious exemption.
When they came for the Jews, you didn't say anything. When they came for the homosexuals, you didn't say anything. When they came for the Catholics, you didn't say anything. When they came for the Protestants, you did not say a word. When they came for the Muslims, you said nothing. When they came for the atheists, you looked around and realized no one was left that would stand up for you...because those of us who are used to shouting directly into the face of tyranny and saying, "We love you, but this is WRONG" were already gone.
The Church will weather this, of course, because the gates of hell will never overtake Her. America? We need to stand up...and stop being concerned only with the next techno toy.
St Michael the Archangel, DEFEND US IN BATTLE.

Rick Santorum, a Hero for Today
Learn about Rick Santorum. Learn as much as you can right now. This man, a man of modest means who is running a Presidential Campaign that is (so far) devoid of hatred, attacks or slander against his opponents is someone to watch.
He is 53 years old, the father of seven and a devout Catholic. He is one of those rare individuals who would rather lose a contest than compromise his beliefs in order to win. In other words, the Catholic concept of never allowing the ends to justify the means is very much alive in his daily life.
Rick is a champion of the unborn, a believer in traditional marriage and one who recognizes that radical Islamic values have NO PLACE in the American landscape any more than the idiotic beliefs of the FLDS.
Last night, in Iowa, the man Bill "I Know Everything" O'Reilly would not interview because he does not think he is very important, kicked Mitt Romney's butt all over the place. Mitt 'won' the Iowa Caucus by 7 votes. Today John McCain came out and endorsed Romney - which should give you an idea of how well respected Romney is as John McCain is the same idiot that tanked his campaign by bringing Sarah Palin on board.
I have supported him from the beginning but used to temper my enthusiasm with the caveat of "I don't care that he won't win. Rick Santorum represents MY values in America and I am supporting the guy". I am not a very big contributor - 20 bucks here and there - but today I gave up my hair appointment that I have been saving for and sent him the money instead. Again...not much....but he needs the money to go against the MILLIONS Mitt "I Get My Own Planet When I Die" Romney has to try and win the White House.
He may not win...but by golly I am going to help him put a DENT in the political landscape...the powers that be are going to know that the tough little Irish/Italian kid represents people like ME.
And we are NOT going softly into that good night.
