The Gift of Fun

I went to the Niner game this past weekend.  It was the first time I saw them win a game at Levi Stadium and I had such a great time.

I went with my friends, Scott and Wanda.  Scott flew all the way from Minnesota to see this game (and to hold up a sign demanding that the Vikings fire Zimmer, the current head coach).  Wanda is a Faithful - like me - and this was her second game at Levi.

Golly we had fun.

As most of you know, I was raised in a very old fashioned way - God, Family and Football.  Scott, Wanda and I started our weekend with Mass and THEN went to the game.

Why do I share that with you?

There are those who believe that it is impossible to be something like a football or baseball fan and love Jesus and His Church at the same time.

I get the worry behind their thinking - are we (us weird people who wear jerseys with multi millionaire men's name on the back) more passionate about our games than God/

Well, I can only speak for myself and my answer is:  without my God?  There is nothing else.

I look at life this way: without a loving and attentive God, nothing would happen.  God is not a divine watchmaker.  Revealed as Father, God provides for us ways in which we can enjoy life and we need to take advantage of that in the way that suits us.

When I was younger I snow skiied, ice skated, danced, swam, acted, sang, and watched sports.  I loved dogs and cats and scary movies.  I loved to write and I tried to paint (I sucked).

Today, I am old.  I love to watch my sports, love my dog, love to write and love to hang with my friends.

None of that would be possible if not for a loving God who cares about every aspect of my life, who never stops thinking of me and who loves me beyond measure.

So of course, God comes first.....

I will wear my jersey and my Dominican cross with enthusiasm.

And I will enjoy the gifts He has given me, one day at a time.
