Boo Boo Tooth and Redemptive Suffering

Nothing is anything more to me; everything is nothing to me, but Jesus: neither things nor persons, neither ideas nor emotions, neither honor nor sufferings. Jesus is for me honor, delight, heart and soul. - Saint Bernadette of Lourdes (1844-1879)

Please check out the latest posting from Patty - she is one of the bravest women I know and will, no doubt, be honored some day as a Great Saint.....

I will never be a great saint. You want to know how I know that? Great saints ask for suffering.

I do not ask for suffering. In fact, if I had my way I would avoid it at all costs. That's why when my Mom got sick last night and had to go to the doctor I was grateful, because my stupid tooth was starting to hurt me and I did not want to call in sick for myself.

I called in sick for my Mom.

Which worked out fine. She had to be checked out for chest congestion that got really bad as well as a fever that went up and so, it was perfect timing. I did not even have to say one thing about my tooth. And the oral surgeon can see me next Wed at 10am to double check on its progress. We are still hoping to save the tooth itself so we can save Leslie some money.

Great saints specifically ask to partake of the suffering of Christ Jesus in order to save the world. People like me specifically ask to win the lotto so we can prove how darn generous we would be once we are wealthy.

Great saints enter into years of spiritual dryness as a result of being willing to sip from the cup of pain that was our Lord's. People like me enter into years of wishing we had never tasted chocolate so that we would not be struggling to lose those last 25 pounds today.

Great saints embrace lonliness and often go off by themselves to pray and to fast. People like me wish John and Keanu would come to their senses and consider going without Sees Candies during Advent to be the supreme sacrifice.

All in all, I can say I am not a great saint. I know that Mother Angelica says we are all great saints in the making; however, I am going to be happy with aiming for heaven and winding up in purgatory for awhile before I enter into the beatific vision. As Barbara Morgan's grandson said, "I'm sure glad it is there".
